9:00 - 10:30 A.M. Keynote Speaker: Jamie McKenzie

Dr. Jamie McKenzie is an international speaker with a focus on questioning, thinking skills, information literacies and the smart use of new technologies. His work takes him from Singapore to Sweden and inspires teachers to challenge students at a high level of rigor.

Jamie is the Editor of "From now On - The Educational Technology Journal," a publication with some 8,000 subscribers, a third of which are from outside North America. He also publishes "The Question Mark," a journal devoted to effective questioning and thinking and "No Child Left," a journal attacking the US education  law,  No Child  Left  Behind,  as a  right wing

attack on public schools. In the early nineties, Jamie was the director of Libraries, Media and Technology for the Bellingham (WA) Public Schools, a district of 18 schools and 10,000 students where he helped to pioneer their networking and program development. He had moved on to support planning and professional development for schools around the world.

A graduate of Yale with an MA from Columbia and Ed. D, from Rutgers, Jamie has been a middle school teacher of English and Social Studies, an assistant principal, an elementary principal, an assistant superintendent in Princeton (NJ) and the superintendent of two districts on the East coast. He also taught four-year-olds in Sunday school.

Jamie has published and spoken extensively on teaching and learning strategies to transform classrooms to support student centred, engaged learning.

Beyond Inquiry
Explore relationships between questioning, pondering, wondering, inventing and acting, as Jamie McKenzie leads the group through a series of activities designed to show that we must take students beyond inquiry, study, and reflection. What are the implications for partnering with classroom teachers? How might we also incorporate print materials or ICT strategies?

Session #L03
Linking Literature with the New Social Studies Curriculum
Presenter: Rosanne Sylvestre, Teacher-librarian, Pembina Trails S.D.
Description: The goal of this workshop is to develop an understanding of why it is a great idea to integrate the use of historical fiction into the new Social Studies curriculum. Students today do not seem to be interested in learning about our past. We need to find ways to make "the olden days" relevant to the students of today. Using novels helps students personalize historical events. Novels help develop a strong sense of what it actually might have been like to have lived through the expulsion of the Acadians, to have been a 14 year old "Filles du Roi" or to have been a stowaway aboard Henry Hudson's boat. The use of Literature Circles, Read-Alouds and personal readings are an ideal way to integrate your Social Studies themes into your LA classes.
Level: Grades 5 & 6

The demo will be done with Windows Movie Maker as that is available to everyone who is running XP and quite simple to use.  Some of the examples have been made with iMovie. However, people will be able to recreate the sample projects with any software they have access to.
