Beyond Inquiry
Explore relationships
between questioning, pondering, wondering, inventing and acting, as Jamie
McKenzie leads the group through a series of activities designed to show
that we must take students beyond inquiry, study, and reflection. What are
the implications for partnering with classroom teachers? How might we also
incorporate print materials or ICT strategies?

Linking Literature with the New
Social Studies Curriculum
Presenter:
Rosanne Sylvestre, Teacher-librarian,
Pembina Trails S.D.
Description:
The goal of
this workshop is to develop an understanding of why it is a great idea to
integrate the use of historical fiction into the new Social Studies
curriculum. Students today do not seem to be interested in learning about
our past. We need to find ways to make "the olden days" relevant to the
students of today. Using novels helps students personalize historical
events. Novels help develop a strong sense of what it actually might have
been like to have lived through the expulsion of the Acadians, to have
been a 14 year old "Filles du Roi" or to have been a stowaway aboard Henry
Hudson's boat. The use of Literature Circles, Read-Alouds and personal
readings are an ideal way to integrate your Social Studies themes into
your LA classes.

Presenter:
Sue
Hjalmarson, Teacher-librarian, Pembina Trails S. D.

Have you ever wanted to do
video editing with students but thought you didn't have the necessary
equipment or expertise? This session will show you how simple it really
is. With equipment that you most likely have in your school already, you
can create exciting and creative video projects with your students. You
will be introduced to the basics of video editing. You will learn how to
import video, edit clips and add titles, transitions and music to your
project. This session will also provide ideas for practical application
of this technology. Although the samples that you will see are geared
primarily for middle years application, video-editing projects can be done
at all levels. The demo
will be done with Windows Movie Maker as that is available to everyone who
is running XP and quite simple to use. Some of the examples have been
made with iMovie. However, people will be able to recreate the sample
projects with any software they have access to.
